Dental Bridges

Dental bridges allow us to replace missing teeth by filling the gap between existing teeth.

A dental bridge is a series of crowns that are fused together and cemented in place. A bridge is one way to replace teeth permanently with a fixed restoration (a restoration that does not come in and out of your mouth like a removable denture or partial). Like crowns, bridges can be made from different materials, such as porcelain-fused to metal (PFM) and all-ceramic.

What to Expect

The process to place a bridge is the same process as placing a crown (a two-visit procedure). After your first visit, your lips and gums may continue to be numb for a few hours until the anesthetic wears off. To avoid injuring your mouth, be careful not to chew on your numb lip or cheek. The second visit does not usually require the area to be numb.

Although a bridge covers the entire visible tooth, the anchoring teeth are still vulnerable to decay and gum disease where the crowns meet the gum line. Food and debris can also get impacted under the portion where the bridge replaced the missing tooth. For this reason, you still need to brush and floss around the crowns and under the bridge on a regular basis to ensure that the bridge and remaining tooth structure have the longest lifespan achievable.
