Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are also called restorations. A filling is used to repair tooth decay (cavities) or defects on the tooth. The purpose of a filling is to restore the tooth to form and function.

The types of dental fillings are:

Tooth-colored restorations: These restorations can be composite (resin) or an ionomer. These fillings are the most aesthetic, as they look like your natural teeth. They are strong, safe and reliable, though they are not quite as strong or wear resistant as amalgam. Ionomers release small amounts of fluoride, which can help protect against decay you if you often get cavities. Ionomer fillings are bonded to the tooth.

Silver fillings: These are also known as dental amalgams. Amalgam fillings have been used for decades. They have been tested for safety and resistance to wear. Dentists have found amalgams to be safe, reliable and effective.

What to Expect

Dental fillings need a single office visit to place a filling into a prepared cavity. After Dr. Alexander has filled the cavity, your lips and gums may stay numb for a few hours until the numbing medicine wears off. To avoid injuring your mouth, be careful not to chew on your numb lip or cheek.

Good oral hygiene in addition to a diet that minimizes sugar, carbohydrates and acidic foods or drinks is helpful in keeping the remaining tooth structure healthy and reducing the risk of new decay forming on the tooth.

I cannot say enough about how amazing Dr. Alexander and her team are!! Not only are they extremely knowledgeable and professional, they are compassionate, and make you feel very comfortable! I highly recommend Encompass Dental - they are wonderful!!
